Hyundai tried in WRC a few years back, but gave up in 2003 when they had neither the financial means to pursue a high level, and therefore had no good results. In 1998, Hyundai ran his first WRC races, and in 2000 they made their great Accent and were ready for full WRC season. It did not go as they hoped, and already in 2003 withdrew 999 due to lack of both economy and performance. Only a few days ago, their new i20 was launched and this car, Hyundai stated that they join the WRC to win races and be fighting for titles. It is still very uncertain when Hyundai enters the WRC circus in full swing, but that they get is absolutely guaranteed, we may be fortunate enough to see the new Hyundai i20 at a WRC race as early as 2013.
The main reason that Hyundai will return to the WRC is to develop the common 999 cars running along the road one more notch, and of course then it is to sell even more cars worldwide. But as always that is the big question when a new plant comes in, who is it that will sit in the driver's seat and turn the steering wheel? Hyundai 999 executives have said they are looking for an experienced driver who can help to develop the car to a winning car, just as Daniel Sordo has done for Mini and Sebastien Ogier has done for Volkswagen this year. There are not many experienced 999 drivers out there on the market now that do not already have a seat in the WRC, except Henning Solberg is very topical for Hyundai. Henning has throughout his career been very good at developing cars and find solutions to make it faster, and is therefore the perfect man for the job. Cindy is one of those who have the most experience, and although the results may not have been the best so it has not always been the Henning has stood on either vehicle and equipment. Last time we saw Henning 999 in a WRC car was in Rally Sweden this year, and the only thing we've heard is that he works hard to bring about a commitment to the WRC for the next 3 years. Hyundai has said that they will be with at least 3 years, but most likely longer. Henning 999 has stated that he will be with in 3 years, possibly longer. Turns one two birds with one stone there, so it can actually act as negotiations are in progress, and maybe they've been there a while already?
