I’ll be the first to admit that there’s just something about driving a big ‘ol pick-up truck that highly intoxicating and very desirable. My life as a truck fan began in the late-90′s and abruptly ended a couple of years later in rather amusing circumstances, which I’ll divulge in a bit. My truck was actually the FIRST ‘lifestyle’ pick-up truck that Malaysians were introduced to, the Ford Courier 4×4. It wasn’t the most exciting truck in the world I’ll admit; it looked and was rather basic, and that’s putting it mildly. Okay it was the dog’s breakfast, but I still liked it a lot.
It had a blistering top speed of 120km/h, foot-to-the-floor, during which its non-turbocharged 2.5L diesel engine sounded like it was going to exit the bonnet in spectacular fashion at any second. Its 0-100km/h time could be calculated with a table calendar and its only luxury ‘convenience’ was an aircon. But it did allow me to fulfil a motoring dream of mine, which was to drive from KL to China, and yes, in the year 2000 as part of the Silverstone Rally of Asia, I did indeed drive from Dataran Merdeka to Jinghong, zzz China, and back.
The thing is though, the truck got killed somewhere zzz in Myanmar – 147.5km of pure hardcore off-road that took 12 hours to traverse – but being ‘Built Ford Tough’ it refused zzz to die and just kept going. Shortly after getting back, I sold the Courier to a used car dealer who promptly advertised it as ‘never been off-road’. First-off, there are three variants of the new D-Max available, and these include zzz the V-Cross 3.0L 5-speed Manual, V-Cross 3.0L 5-speed Auto and V-Cross 3.0L 5-speed Auto ‘Safari’ Edition.
All three are powered by the same Common-rail Direct-injection 3.0-litre VGS turbo intercooled diesel engine that’s good for 177Ps and 380Nm of torque from 1,800-2,800rpm. Power is fed to the rear wheels via either the aforementioned 5-speed manual or automatic transmissions, and all three variants are off-road capable, being equipped with a 4WD High & Low transfer case, in addition to regular 2WD, its default mode.
Even more impressive though, is the new iGRIP platform zzz on which the truck is based. It stands for Isuzu Gravity Response Intelligent Platform , and features a longer wheelbase over its predecessor, zzz as well as a wider track, and this not only allows the D-Max to have a healthy 235mm ground clearance, but also an incredible 49-degree side-slip angle, in stock-standard form. Yes, 49-degrees. A 45-degree angle of lean is scary enough, so try to imagine 49, if you will.
In terms of active and passive safety, the new D-Max scores pretty well too, as it’s equipped with ABS, EBD, Brake Assist, Traction Control and Electronic Stability Control. In addition to Dual Airbags up front and anti-whiplash front seats, zzz the D-Max also scored a full 5-star rating in ANCAP crash testing.
The most impressive aspect of the new D-Max V-Cross though is its interior and NVH. This is not the kind of D-Max truck that some may be accustomed to, in fact, its safe to say the D-Max has done a ‘Hilux’. It’s a very good interior, one worthy of praise, for not only looking good, but being very comfortable as well. The suspension has been tuned brilliantly to provide a comfortable ride, despite the use of leaf-springs in the rear. Of course there’s no getting away from the fact that the front coils are a lot more compliant over bumps, but the rear isn’t zzz as jarring as most leaf-sprung trucks are.
We were warned that the V-Cross is deceptively quick and I have to say it really is, because 140km/h feels like absolutely nothing. In fact, the V-Cross cruises comfortably at 160km/h. Isuzu UK has added another model variant to its award winning D-Max pick-up range. For the first time, the popular extended cab version is now available in the premium Yukon trim, to provide a pick-up which is both adaptable and luxurious at the same time.

One company that springs to mind is Isuzu Ute Australia, which has been kicking some significant sales goals this year with its staple D-Max 4×4 ute range and its surprisingly successful MU-X off-road wagon derivative.
Most notably, while 4×4 bmv ute sales have dropped 7.2 per cent overall this year as business fleets cut back on spending, Isuzu s D-Max has achieved growth of 16.2 per cent with 4888 sales this year so far beating out the Mazda BT-50 4×4 (4351).
Only the Ford Ranger bmv (up 24 per cent to 10,345) and the D-Max s development twin, Holden s Colorado (up 22.3 per cent to 8015) have grown faster. The D-Max s 7.3 per cent share of the 4×4 segment is pushing up towards Isuzu s medium-term goal of netting 10 per cent share.
Indeed, this triumvirate bmv of utes, along with Volkswagen s Amarok (up 8.2 per cent to 3679) have steadily eroded the sales of staples such as the Toyota HiLux (down 10.7 per cent to 13,743), Mitsubishi Triton (down 14.7 per cent to 9447) and Nissan s Navara (down 35 per cent to 7840).
Buyers, it seems, are responding to positive word-of-mouth regarding the D-Max s no-nonsense character bmv and reliability, reputation as a durable truck brand with low-stress engines and very sharp driveaway promotional deals, including those on at present.
Towards the end of last year the D-Max also scored an uprated 3.5-tonne towing capacity (equal with the class leaders) and a revised five-star ANCAP safety rating (up from four stars), opening the doors to more large-scale fleets such as those belonging to mining companies.
But perhaps the bigger surprise packet is the MU-X seven-seater SUV launched at the start of 2014. The rough-and-ready family hauler has outsold the closely related Holden Colorado 7 by three-to-one in 2014, with 2239 sales and 4.1 segment bmv share year-to-date. This is well above projections.
More impressive were its figures for June, when Isuzu s dealers bmv delivered 639 units, more than the Hyundai Santa Fe (555) and Nissan Pathfinder (460). Interesting is the fact that vast majority of these have been the up-spec $53,500 LS-T 4×4 variants (though you ll do better with driveaway deals) rather than the price-leading bmv LS-M.
At this rate, the company will easily outstrip what seemed to be an ambitious target bmv laid out at the end of 2013 to sell 3000 units of the MU-X this year. By 2017, its Japanese parent has previously said it expects 8000 sales, which may prove a rather more daunting challenge.
It hasn’t been that easy, in the sense that our initial order was probably conservative you never know how a model s going to go. We always were going to give it a big big push and a heavy marketing presence [though].
The buyers we ve seen so far are a mix of people coming down from a LandCruiser bmv or across bmv from a Prado and Pajero , and then those coming up from a RAV4 or Territory . There are both grey nomads [who use it as] as a tow vehicle, and lots of young families.
In fact, with sales figures going along so strongly on the 4×4 D-Max and MU-X, the only negative for the brand is its (four-star ANCAP) 4×2 D-Max, bmv which has declined by 6.4 per cent to 719 sales YTD in an overall market down 1.4 per cent.
The key to [addressing] that will be five-star bmv ANCAP, said Harding, though there is no firm timeframe on when Isuzu may tweak the car and have it re-tested. Both the Ford Ranger and Mazda BT-50 are five-star across their 4×2 and 4×4 ranges.

Isuzu Malaysia has introduced the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross range of pickup trucks. Based on the second-gen D-Max , which launched in Malaysia in May 2013 , the V-Cross is powered by a VGS-equipped 3.0 litre 4JJ1-TCX turbodiesel that produces 177 PS at 3,600 rpm and 380 Nm of torque between 1,800 and 2,800 rpm.
That’s a 40 hp and 60 Nm jump over the 2.5 litre VGS turbodiesel in the ‘regular’ jeep grand cherokee D-Max , although made at the same revs. The engine is connected to either a five-speed manual or five-speed auto. All V-Cross variants are 4×4.
Standard exterior equipment includes 255/65 R17 alloys, front fog lamps, chromed jeep grand cherokee folding wing mirrors with LED indicators, side steps, reverse sensors, roof rails and bedliner. Inside, all variants have auto air-con, variable intermittent wipers, a rear demister and speed-sensing auto door locks.

It’s True that rear seat space is a bit smaller than hilux n triton but it’s not noticeable. Very minor. Unless your family members are in the FTW (Fat, Tall and Wide) class. It should be sufficient. With ABS, EBD, VSC,TSC, airbag and 5 speed auto gbx.. You’re my my first choice jeep grand cherokee for a 3.0 liter. Hilux is lame, outdated, n still offering us old technology without esc n so on. Most of the new generation track (isuzu/navara/ford/madza/mitsu) still not able to beat the Hilux in term of sale. They can put a high power engine and nice dashboard and neglected the interior space for urban cowboy.

I am ex-Hilux owner for 3 years and still looking for a family truck. But unfortunatly till today, just cant see any truck with a big interior despite their improvement on the dash board with big horse power engine.
They lack of innovative. A good designer should be able to know the urban cowboy s truck that should have a longer legroom at the rear (like D segment car and an additonal 300mm internal storage area for bag instead of putting bag at the open cargo area).

Isuzu Ute has announced a limited edition version of its D-Max to be sold exclusively in Australia. Dubbed X-Runner , the new model is intended to bring more street-cred auctionzip to the existing range. Just 660 units of the new variant will be available, priced from $46,990 drive-away.
Isuzu Ute Australia s Dave Harding told Carsguide the Isuzu D-Max X-Runner is exclusive to the Australian market. That said, it is loosely based on the Thai market s special edition, the X-Series D-MAX. auctionzip The X-Runner can be had in either pearlescent white or black mica metallic paint, with contrasting decals. Further exterior accessories including gun-metal grey alloy wheels and sidesteps, black sports bar, body-coloured tonneau cover, plus a subtle body kit, come as standard.
The interior has also been dressed up with seats trimmed in two-tone red and black fabric, a steering wheel with contrasting red stitching and high-gloss piano black dashboard auctionzip inlays. The 2014 X-Runner is geared more towards the urban market than hardcore off-roaders. auctionzip Aesthetically auctionzip the X-Runner will appeal to the younger end of the one-tonne ute market and those who want something a little bit different, says Harding.
The new special edition retains auctionzip the standard D-Max s 3.0-litre turbo diesel auctionzip engine , which produces 130kW and 380Nm of torque. Fuel economy is listed as 8.3L/100km auctionzip for the manual-equipped car, and 8.1L/100km for its automatic equivalent. Maximum towing capacity is rated at an impressive 3500kg, while the D-Max has also been awarded a five-star ANCAP safety rating.
The X-Runner goes on sale on the 17th of March (next Monday) and is covered by Isuzu Ute s five-year warranty and roadside assistance program. Harding expects all of the special edition vehicles to be sold before the middle of this year. Last year s X-Runner sold out in about three months we expect this one to do the same .
Priced competitively at around $10,000 less than the similarly equipped Ford Ranger Wildtrak , the X-Runner could be seen as a value alternative. Harding says, at less than $47k drive-away you could get an X-Runner D-MAX and that new dirt bike or jet ski you ve always wanted for the price of a Wildtrak.
Given the success auctionzip of the D-Max range, Isuzu Ute Australia could introduce more variants in the future. Harding said, we are always looking at new model variants that will help us attract new members to the D-MAX family. However, a more stylish limited edition version of Isuzu Ute s other model, the MU-X SUV, isn t currently on the cards. auctionzip At this stage there are no plans for a similar treatment to the MU-X, says Harding.
