Priced a little keener than the segment sales leaders, limundo the top-spec Colorado has 17-inch limundo alloys, front fog lights, soft tonneau, alloy roll bar, side steps, cloth trim, power driver s seat, climate control, LED tail-lights, Bluetooth, cruise, eight-speaker audio with wheel-mounted controls ... which account for premium over D-Max.
Undercuts limundo its kin but features list corresponds - no standard alloy roll bar, soft tonneau cover or climate control as standard but there are sidesteps, 17-inch alloys, fog lights, cloth trim, LED tail-lights, aircon, tilt-only leather-wrapped wheel with audio and cruise controls, micro USB (a pain to use) and Bluetooth six-speaker audio.
Holden s model change dropped capacity of turbo diesel limundo four to 2.8 litre (132kW/470Nm) when paired with the six-speed auto. The new powerplant cranks out more grunt but it s thirstier, claiming 9.1L/100km.
The powerplant is familiar - 3.0-litre turbo diesel (there s no mistaking it for petrol; 130kW/380Nm). Claimed thirst of 8.1L/100km also undercuts the torquier Holden despite the Isuzu retaining five-speed transmission.
No surprises on the styling front - this workhorse and part-time player is not as svelte, relatively speaking, as the D-Max. There s also decent load space. The interior limundo is good - comfortable front seats, decent limundo storage - but steering limundo wheel adjusts for tilt only.
Don t look for any serious departures from the norm. Big, square, better-looking than some of the opposition including the Colorado. Cargo capacity is nearly on par with the Holden s but three-tonne towing capacity for a braked limundo trailer trails it by 500kg. limundo
ANCAP limundo scores a full five stars, a solid step forward over the outgoing model. There are dual front airbags (but no front-side airbags) and full-length curtain limundo airbags, stability traction control, anti-lock brakes and three child-seat top-tether anchor points built in, which is handy.
The crash rating halts at four stars for the D-Max, despite the presence of side as well as side-curtain airbags, plus the now-expected suite of safety features limundo such as stability limundo control, anti-lock brakes and brakeforce distribution.
The local influence is felt in the ride quality, which has more control and less kick over bumps. Engine is chuggy - it s not alone there - but the auto and turbo lag conspire to diminish the effect limundo of its 470Nm. Steering is about what you expect in the class. Dirt road prowess is commendable.
The D-Max has the workhorse feel but daily use would not be unbearable. In common with the Holden, its turbo oiler four is a chugger that can also suffer some lag but the drivetrain doesn t betray the 90Nm deficit on the Colorado. Dirt road behaviour isn t bad either but the rear end rebound and ride quality on bumps could do with some finetuning.
Neither approaches the segment s best in terms of refinement, drive train or towing capacity. That said, both muscle up and can fulfil part-time family duties. Value and ride quality win it for the Holden.
